Is Your Internet Marketing Business Organized?

July 12th, 2010 · No Comments

You’ll find many who consider internet marketing to be easy. Besides, how tough can it really be since it’s all online? The truth is that being an internet marketer is not all that different from running an offline business. Yes, of course, most of your dealings occur online. But that doesn’t change the fact that this new income source must be treated like a real business – because it really is. Ok, so it’s time to organize! However, knowing that needs to be done and then really organizing can be quite different. Here are some hints to help you get started.

Keep track of your finances. A lot of marketers just don’t keep an eye on what comes in and what goes out moneywise. A lot of online marketers follow the simple philosophy that if there’s some cash in the bank at the end of the day, then that’s the only thing that matters in business. It’s important to know about your finances for tax purposes and other reasons such as invoices, or refunds, etc.

The easiest way to keep track of your spending and earning is to simply keep a ledger. Every day write down the money that people pay to you and the money that you pay to other people. Then, at the end of each month, add up both columns and figure out your profits. But there’s software that can also provide this information, Quicken can do this.

Your work-space, keep everything put away and in its place, also keep your area free and clean. Be sure to take a little time every day to keep your work space/desk free from unnecessary items. Take care of your filing. Keep items where they belong, for example – you really don’t want to spend 15 minutes looking for the sticky notes only to find them under a stack of books. Designate permanent locations for everything you have from office supplies to emails to images – everything. You can either return items to their proper place after using them, of take the time when you’re done for the day and clean-up.

Eventually you will need a filing cabinet. Yes, you can keep your IM records on your computer, but you should also print out your records as a backup. In the unfortunate situation that you lose all your PC information, you’ll still have the copies. If you laptop just up and dies on you, think of all the possibilities for delays and lost business because you didn’t have the information? Keeping hard copy records helps you keep track of these things and makes tracking your earnings and deductions much easier come tax time.

As you do this, you’ll quickly recognize that implementing some organizational elements to your online business will help everything flow better. Where you were once spending half your day trying to track various things, now you simply need to open a file or folder on your computer and you’re ready to go. Remember, every moment that you aren’t actually working on your business is a moment that is not earning you any money!
