Try to improve your relationships with your existing Twitter followers. Turn them into personal contacts and you will have a much better chance of creating a productive business relationship. Once you have 100-500 Twitter followers, try to contact some of them through conventional means as opposed to trying to increase your Twitter following further. If you are interested in trying to convert your Twitter followers into real business contacts than you might try a few things. The first would be to manage your Twitter account using HootSuite. This will automatically organize tweets for the upcoming week and tweet your followers if you add a new page to your website or blog.
You do no want to blatantly advertise when you are sending out your tweets, but you do want to subtly promote yourself. Basically, it is ok to self-promote so long as you are providing your followers with something of value. So, you want to mainly use tweets to link back to things that you have produced yourself. Taking this approach, it is important to not always link back to your own personal site. You need to write guest posts for other people’s blogs, submit articles at the best article directories, publish content on web 2.0 sites, etc. You need to offer your followers some variety as otherwise they will become bored and will stop clicking on the links in your tweets.
Proving yourself an expert in your field through diverse and worthwhile tweets will gain you a following. Any new followers of your tweets can be e-mail to you by HootSuite. You can then search their profile to see if they are worthy personal contacts and link them to your own blog or website. You want to encourage close links between yourself and your followers. To achieve this, post your personal contact information on your website/blog. You should encourage your followers to join your mailing list and subscribe to your RSS feed.
